The Ice Cubes Synchro Team Comes to Babson !!!
We are delighted to welcome The Ice Cubes Synchronized Skating Team as our newest members to the Babson Skating Club. The Ice Cubes are a premier synchronized skating team competing at the juvenile level.
Synchronized skating began about 50 years ago. It is among the fastest growing segments of figure skating. Synchronized skating involves 16 to 20 skaters performing breath-taking functions and maneuvers while skating in unison to choreographed routines. The very competitive juvenile division involves 12-20 skaters under the age of 13 who compete regionally and nationally.
The Ice Cubes have been a part of this rich history. For more than 20 years, they represented Hayden Recreation Centre, in Lexington. This is an exciting move that will allow them to attract from a much larger and diverse pool of skaters. The Ice Cubes are known nationally for their consistent performance in the very competitive Juvenile division. Under the direction of their coach, Doreen Chapman Trunfio, The Ice Cubes have earned more National and Eastern Sectional Championship titles in their division than any other USFS team, and won their first International Championship in 1997. The Ice Cubes have earned nearly 56 medals in their competitive career, half of them Gold. Skaters range in age from 9 to just under 13 years old.
Doreen
Chapman Trunfio has been the head coach of the Ice Cubes since they began competition
in 1984. She has coached nationally recognized teams for more than 20 years.
Doreen also instructs ice dance, freestyle, and moves. She has coached numerous
teams at the intermediate, novice and junior levels including: Nor’easters
Intermediate, Storm Junior, Storm Intermediate, and Hayden Black Pearl Junior.
Doreen previously skated for Jubilee on Ice in Sarasota, Florida and for Holiday
on Ice in Europe. She holds a silver medal in Ice Dance and two pre-gold dance
tests.
Very limited positions are available on the team for the 2006-2007 competition
season. If you are interested you may join the team for a “skate-with”
session. It will occur from 4:30-5:50pm on June 11, 2006 at the North Shore
Figure Skating Club, Burbank Ice Arena in Reading. For more information please
contact icecubes@rcn.com
In
addition to the "skate-with" session mentioned above. Doreen and the
Babson Skating Club would like to offer a priority placement on the Ice Cubes
for those Babson Members meeting the requirements necessary for the Juvenile
Team. Please join Coach Doreen and your fellow Babson skaters for an informal
skills assessment on Friday June 9th at (6:00pm) at the Babson Ice Rink. For
more information contact Doreen at 978-835-3979.

As
part of a school-related community service project, long standing member, Joshua
Dale, is running a fund raiser for a shelter for women and children located
in Waltham named 'Sandra's Lodge.' Joshua hopes everyone will help by contributing
nonperishable food and toiletries at our upcoming Spring Show being held Saturday,
May 7, 2005. Items will also be available for purchase at the show. Please support
him in his efforts, every little bit counts!
Here is a letter from Joshua about his project:
Dear Babson Skating Club Member:
I am Joshua Dale. I have been a member of the Babson Skating Club for seven years. Over this winter I have participated in community service for my school, helping a place called Sandra's Lodge in Waltham. I would like to do more for them now that the season is over.
Sandra's Lodge is a shelter for women and children. They describe themselves as:Sandra's Lodge is an emergency intake family shelter for homeless single mothers and their children. The shelter opened in January of 1999 and is named in memory of a woman who was a former employee of M.H.S.A. and who dedicated much of her short life to helping others. Sandra was a strong advocate for addressing the needs of the homeless, the elderly and the helpless. The program is funded by the Department of Transitional Assistance and provides a safe environment with ancillary services to thirty-five homeless families. The essential goals of the program are to secure permanent, affordable housing for its residents and offer the appropriate support services which will enable the family to function independently.
You can find out more information about them at: http://www.mhsainc.org/sandra's.htm.
As part of the Spring Skating Show the Babson Skating Club will be holding a drive for the things that Sandra's Lodge needs. We will mainly be collecting non-perishable food for the people. Canned food is great. We will also be selling cans at the show, which can be purchased for the shelter. In addition to food they also need toiletries: toothpaste, shampoo, etc. Please try to bring something to the show to help all the people that Sandra's Lodge is supporting. Monetary donations will also be accepted.
In addition, we will probably be holding a raffle at the show to raise money for Sandra's Lodge. Please contact me with any donations. My e-mail address is joshua_dale@nobles.edu and I can be reached at my home phone number: (781) 449-1551 or my cell phone: (781) 405-3254. Please do not call my cell phone between 8:00AM and 3:30PM. I am hoping to sell raffle tickets at the entrance as well as inside the rink.
I hope that everyone from the skating club helps make this drive a success. It will be appreciated by the people at Sandra's Lodge.
Thanks for your support,
Joshua Dale
